The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq (formerly known as the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations) are the leading stock exchanges in the U.S. The U.S. stock market is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Traders can purchase shares only during the stock market's regular trading hours, every Monday to Friday from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern Time (ET). The stock market remains closed on weekends and major holidays in the year.
