Weekly Special Report: Micron Technology (#MICRON)
MICRON: THE COMPANY
- MICRON is an American semiconductor company founded in 1978. It makes memory chips and data storage products used in smartphones, computers, data centres, cars, and artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
- MICRON STOCK IS INCLUDED IN THE S&P 500 AND NASDAQ 100 INDEXES (USA500, USA100.
- MICRON MAIN PRODUCTS: MEMORY CHIPS. These chips store information and make it available to processors when needed. They play an important role in running computers, processing data, and powering AI applications.
DRAM: Short-term memory that allows computers and processors to access data quickly while running programs and performing tasks.
NAND flash: Long-term storage memory used in SSDs (Solid-State Drives), which store files, programs, and other information even when a device is switched off.
HIGH-BANDWIDTH MEMORY (HBM): Advanced, high-speed memory designed to handle large amounts of data efficiently. It is widely used in AI processors and high-performance data centres.
MICRON: WHY IT MATTERS IN THE A.I. WORLD
- HIGH-BANDWIDTH MEMORY (HBM): This type of memory is placed very close to AI processors, allowing data to move between them much faster. It helps AI systems process information efficiently and reduces delays during AI training and other demanding tasks.
- AI CHIPS NEED MORE MEMORY: As AI processors become more powerful, they need larger amounts of memory to handle complex tasks. The growing number of AI chips used in data centres is also increasing demand for advanced memory products such as Micron’s HBM.
- A.I. MEMORY DEMAND IS EXCEEDING SUPPLY. Major memory producers, including SK Hynix and Samsung, expect supply shortages to remain a challenge in the coming years, potentially through 2028–2030.
MICRON: POSSIBLE STRIKES IN TAIWAN INITIALLY WEIGHED ON THE STOCK PRICE
- BREAKING (OCTOBER 7): MICRON WORKERS IN TAIWAN AUTHORIZE A POSSIBLE STRIKE. Around 99% of voting union members (1,994 workers) supported strike action over bonuses and profit sharing. DRAM accounted for around 75.6% of Micron’s fiscal 2026 revenue, highlighting the importance of maintaining uninterrupted production. However, no strike date has been announced, and negotiations remain possible.
- TAIWAN IS CRUCIAL TO MICRON’S PRODUCTION. Approximately 65% of Micron’s DRAM production takes place in Taiwan. A strike could disrupt output, but the company has a strong business interest in reaching an agreement and protecting production.
- A SETTLEMENT COULD PREVENT A STRIKE. In May 2026, Samsung reached a tentative pay agreement just one day before a planned 18-day strike involving around 48,000 workers, demonstrating that last-minute negotiations can avert industrial action in the semiconductor industry.
