The GER40 traded lower while European stock markets traded in mixed fashion Thursday, with strong results from energy giant Shell helping the FTSE 100 outperform ahead of policy setting meetings by both the European Central Bank and the Bank of England. Later, the European Central Bank is widely expected to keep policy unchanged but pressure is mounting on the institution to act, given data released on Wednesday showing that inflation in the Eurozone rose to 5.1% in January, the highest ever for the region, despite expectations for a drop to 4.4%.
