Weekly Special Report: Platinum
PLATINUM USE AND MARKET SHARE
- PLATINUM has been a key element in auto catalysts for over forty years, especially for diesel engines, and is increasingly vital in hydrogen fuel cells. The automotive sector is its largest consumer, accounting for about 40% of annual demand.
- MARKET SHARE: LARGEST PLATINUM CONSUMER IN THE WORLD. The latest official available data for 2024 showed that China is the world's largest platinum consumer, with a 29% market share.
- MARKET SHARE: LARGEST PLATINUM PRODUCERS IN THE WORLD. South Africa is the largest producer, holding 70–74% of the global market share, while Russia is the second-largest, with 10–12% of the market. Zimbabwe is third, with 5–8%.
PLATINUM: LOW GLOBAL INVENTORIES
- PLATINUM OUTLOOK REMAINS POSITIVE AS GLOBAL INVENTORIES REMAIN LOW. Platinum inventories remain critically low after several years of significant deficits, while supply has limited room to increase significantly. At the same time, industrial demand is expected to grow, supported by applications in automotive, electronics, and AI-related infrastructure.
EVENTS (U.S.):
- WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14 AT 13:30 GMT+1: US INFLATION DATA (CPI) (SEPTEMBER). A softer-than-expected CPI could further decrease rate hike expectations and support industrial metals demand, potentially boosting platinum prices.
- THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15 AT 13:30 GMT+1: U.S. PRODUCERS’ PRICE INDEX (PPI) (SEPTEMBER). U.S. PPI increased in August from 0.1% to 0.4%, which was in line with expectations after several months of a fall.
- THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15 AT 13:30 GMT+1: U.S. RETAIL SALES (SEPTEMBER). In August, Retail Sales increased 1.2% after an unexpected fall in August. A weak report could reduce expectations of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike, weighing on the U.S. dollar and supporting platinum prices.
EVENTS (CHINA):
- WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14 AT 02:30 GMT+1: CHINA INFLATION (CPI) (SEPTEMBER). Stronger-than-expected data could reinforce expectations of stronger economic activity, supporting platinum prices. In August, China’s inflation rose by 0.8% year over year.
- WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14 AT 04:30 GMT+1: CHINA EXPORT AND IMPORT DATA (SEPTEMBER) (EXPORT PREVIOUS: +25.0%; IMPORT PREVIOUS: +28.2%).
- MONDAY, OCTOBER 19 AT 03:00 GMT+1: CHINA INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION (SEPTEMBER) (PREVIOUS: +5.2%)
TECHNICAL ANALYSIS:
- SUPPORT AREA: $1,500 - $1,600. After recently falling, Platinum is back near its strongest support area around 1,500-
1,600. Platinum has tested this region on 4 occasions over the past year, repeatedly rebounding from these levels. However, the price could also fall.
- PLATINUM PRICE HIT AN ALL-TIME HIGH OF $2,920 (January 26, 2026). Platinum prices have recently traded around $1,684, and if a full recovery to the previous all-time high takes place, upside potential of around 73% could be seen. However, the price could also decline.
