Weekly Special Report: Platinum
PLATINUM USE AND MARKET SHARE
- PLATINUM has been a key element in auto catalysts for over forty years, especially for diesel engines, and is increasingly vital in hydrogen fuel cells. The automotive sector is its largest consumer, accounting for about 40% of annual demand.
- MARKET SHARE (PRODUCERS): BIGGEST PLATINUM PRODUCERS IN THE WORLD. South Africa is the largest producer, holding 72.8% of the global market share, while Russia is the second with 8-10% of the market. Zimbabwe is third with 5%.
- MARKET SHARE (CONSUMERS): China is the world's largest platinum consumer, with 34%, while Europe holds 22%, and North America holds 16% of the platinum consumed worldwide.
EVENTS (U.S.):
- WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26 AT 13:30 GMT+1: U.S. GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT (GDP) (Q2). A preliminary report published at the end of July showed a decrease from 2.1% to 1.5% despite no change was expected. Another disappointing report may increase concern regarding the U.S. economy and have a negative impact on the U.S. dollar giving support to platinum prices.
- FRIDAY, AUGUST 28 AT 15:00 GMT+1: U.S. FEDERAL RESERVE (FED) CHAIRMAN KEVIN WARSH SPEECH. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh will deliver his first address at the Jackson Hole Symposium. If he signals that the Fed is likely to keep interest rates unchanged and sees little need for further increases, the U.S. dollar could weaken, which would support platinum but the opposite scenario is also possible.
EVENTS (CHINA):
- MONDAY, AUGUST 31 AT 02:30 GMT+1: CHINA MANUFACTURING PMI (AUGUST). The Manufacturing PMI (Purchasing Managers’ Index) provides an early monthly indication of economic activity in China’s manufacturing sector. In July it fell from 50.3 to 49.2, below expected 50.1.
PLATINUM MARKET: TIGHT SUPPLY AND STRUCTURAL DEMAND UNDERPIN 2026 OUTLOOK
- MARKET DEFICIT: The platinum market is expected to remain in a supply deficit, with a shortage of around 297,000 ounces in 2026. Limited supply and lower inventories could continue to support platinum prices.
- SUPPLY CONSTRAINTS: Platinum production remains limited due to problems in South Africa, including aging mines, electricity shortages, and labor issues. Russian supply is also under pressure due to sanctions and logistical challenges.
- STRONG AUTOMOTIVE DEMAND: Slower electric vehicle adoption is supporting platinum demand because hybrid and traditional vehicles still require catalytic converters. Stricter emissions rules are also increasing demand.
- INDUSTRIAL DEMAND: Industrial demand for platinum increased by 41% year-on-year in Q1 2026, showing stronger demand from industrial sectors.
