Weekly Special Report: GBP/USD
EVENTS
- WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26 AT 13:30 GMT+1: U.S. CORE PCE PRICE INDEX (JULY). Investors will closely watch the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation measure after Core PCE remained at 3.3% in June. Another decline could further reduce expectations of interest rate hikes, weakening the U.S. dollar and supporting GBP/USD.
- WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26 AT 13:30 GMT+1: U.S. GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT (GDP) (Q2 – SECOND ESTIMATE). U.S. economic growth was previously estimated at 1.5%, below the 2.1% expected and down from 2.1% previously. Another weak reading or downward revision could increase concerns about slowing U.S. economic growth, potentially weakening the U.S. dollar and supporting GBP/USD.
- THURSDAY, AUGUST 27 AT 13:30 GMT+1: U.S. INITIAL JOBLESS CLAIMS. Higher claims could further reduce expectations for Federal Reserve interest rate hikes, potentially weakening the U.S. dollar and supporting GBP/USD.
U.S. GOVERNMENT:
- BREAKING (AUGUST 19): U.S. TREASURY ANNOUNCES MORE AGGRESSIVE LONG-TERM BOND REPURCHASE PROGRAMME. The Treasury will double the size of its long-term bond repurchase operations to $4 billion from $2 billion, starting September 9. With around $69 billion already planned through November, the larger operations could add at least $14 billion, bringing the total to around $83 billion. The move could increase market liquidity, potentially weighing on the U.S. dollar and supporting the GBP/USD pair.
JACKSON HOLE ECONOMIC SYMPOSIUM HOSTED BY THE U.S. FEDERAL RESERVE:
- EVENT (AUGUST 27 – 29): JACKSON HOLE ECONOMIC SYMPOSIUM HOSTED BY U.S. FEDERAL RESERVE. The annual Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, brings together global central bankers, economists, and policymakers to discuss key economic challenges. Markets will focus on U.S. monetary policy, inflation, economic growth, and future interest rate decisions under new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh.
- EVENT (EXPECTED: FRIDAY, AUGUST 28 AT 15:00 GMT+1): U.S. FED CHAIR KEVIN WARSH SPEECH. His first Jackson Hole speech as Fed Chair could provide important insight into the Fed’s policy direction.
U.S. FEDERAL RESERVE
- EVENT (WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 AT 19:00 GMT+1): U.S. FEDERAL RESERVE (FED) INTEREST RATE DECISION. The Fed kept interest rates unchanged at 3.75% at its latest meeting and continued to downplay the likelihood of further rate hikes in 2026.
BANK OF ENGLAND CENTRAL BANK
- EVENT (THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 AT 12:00 GMT+1): BANK OF ENGLAND (BOE) INTEREST RATE DECISION. The Bank of England is expected to keep interest rates unchanged at 3.75%. However, markets expect at least one interest rate hike by the end of 2026.
TECHNICAL ANALYSIS:
- GBP/USD BREAKS ABOVE KEY 1.3600 LEVEL: GBP/USD has broken above 1.3600, an important technical level that has acted as resistance several times since 2025 and as a key price level in the past. The pair is now trading around 1.3640, and holding above 1.3600 could reinforce this level as new support. However, it could also decline.
