U.S. stocks retreated on Tuesday and the Dow dropped for a ninth straight session, as investors were cautious ahead of the Federal Reserve's final policy announcement of the year after economic data indicated consumer spending remained solid.

On Tuesday the S&P 500 was down 0.39%, the Nasdaq 100 fell 0.32%, while the Dow Jones declined 0.61%.
