GEOPOLITICS: MIDDLE EAST
- MIDDLE EAST TENSIONS REMAIN HIGH: MORE U.S.–IRAN TALKS EXPECTED THIS WEEK (February 9 - February 15). The United States and Iran held indirect nuclear talks in Oman through a mediator and confirmed that further negotiations are expected this week. According to Reuters, Iranian officials reiterated that the missile program is non-negotiable and warned of retaliation if Iran is attacked, keeping regional tensions elevated.
- EVENT (WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11): ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER NETANYAHU TO MEET US PRESIDENT TRUMP. According to Reuters, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with President Donald Trump in Washington on Wednesday. Netanyahu has stressed that any deal must limit Iran’s ballistic missile program and regional influence.
- US MILITARY ASSETS ARRIVED IN INTERNATIONAL WATERS NEAR IRAN AND ARE READY TO INTERVENE. The US “USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN” carrier and its group have arrived in the Arabian Sea near the Gulf of Oman. Along the carrier, the group is escorted by missile destroyers like the USS Spruance, USS Michael Murphy, and USS Frank E Petersen. Now, Iranian targets are within the striking range of this battle group.
STRAIT OF HORMUZ AT RISK: KEY LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS (LNG) SUPPLY ROUTE. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical energy chokepoint through which 20–25% of global LNG exports pass, mainly from Qatar, one of the world’s largest LNG exporters. Rising tensions with Iran raise the risk that Tehran could attempt to block or disrupt traffic through the strait, tightening global LNG supply and adding upside pressure to natural gas prices.
EUROPE: NATURAL GAS STORAGE HAS DECLINED TO 37.08% OF CAPACITY
- EUROPEAN NATURAL GAS STORAGE IS 28.87% BELOW THE 5-YEAR AVERAGE. Natural gas storage levels in Europe have continued to decline, falling below the five-year average and approaching levels last seen in 2022 for the same period of the year. Weather conditions across Europe have supported higher natural gas demand, while a stronger refilling season could be ahead in 2026. After cutting itself off from Russian natural gas, Europe has recently reached an agreement with the United States to increase purchases of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
EVENTS
- THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12 AT 15:30 GMT: U.S. WEEKLY NATURAL GAS STORAGE DATA. U.S. natural gas inventories have declined for the past eleven consecutive weeks, confirming tightening market fundamentals.
TECHNICAL ANALYSIS
- SUPPORT: $3. Natural gas has maintained strong support near $3 since late 2024, testing the area eight times and confirming it as a solid support zone. However, it could also decline.
