Weekly Special Report: EUR/USD
U.S. GOVERNMENT:
- BREAKING (AUGUST 19): U.S. TREASURY ANNOUNCED MORE AGGRESSIVE LONG-TERM BOND REPURCHASE PROGRAMME. The Treasury will double the size of its long-term bond repurchase operations to $4 billion from $2 billion, starting September 9. The Treasury had already planned around $69 billion of repurchases across all maturities between August and November, with the larger operations expected to add at least $14 billion, bringing the total to around $83 billion. The larger repurchases could increase liquidity in financial markets, potentially weighing on the U.S. dollar and supporting EUR/USD prices.
JACKSON HOLE ECONOMIC SYMPOSIUM HOSTED BY THE U.S. FEDERAL RESERVE
- EVENT (AUGUST 27 – 29): JACKSON HOLE ECONOMIC SYMPOSIUM HOSTED BY U.S. FEDERAL RESERVE. The annual Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, brings together global central bankers, economists, and policymakers to discuss key economic challenges. Markets will focus on U.S. monetary policy, inflation, economic growth, and future interest rate decisions under new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh.
- EVENT (EXPECTED: FRIDAY, AUGUST 28 AT 15:00 GMT+1): U.S. FED CHAIR KEVIN WARSH SPEECH. His first Jackson Hole speech as Fed Chair could provide important insight into the Fed’s policy direction.
EVENTS (USA):
- WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26 AT 13:30 GMT+1: U.S. GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT (GDP) (Q2). A preliminary report published at the end of July showed a decrease from 2.1% to 1.5% despite no change was expected. Another disappointing report may increase concern regarding the U.S. economy and have a negative impact on the U.S. dollar giving support to EUR/USD prices.
EVENTS (EUROPE):
- TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 AT 10:00 GMT+1: EUROZONE INFLATION (CPI) (AUG). Eurozone inflation currently stands at 2.9%. However, a higher-than-expected reading could support EUR/USD, while a lower-than-expected reading could weigh on the pair.
- THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 AT 13:15 GMT+1: EUROPEAN CENTRA BANK (ECB) INTEREST RATE DECISION. The ECB is widely expected to raise rates by 25 basis points in September from the current deposit rate of 2.25% to 2.50%. Expectations of further ECB rate hiking could support the euro, especially if the Fed remains less hawkish.
TECHNICAL ANALYSIS
- SUPPORT AREA: 1.1500 - 1.1400. After breaking above the 1.1500 mark towards 1.1600, EUR/USD is establishing new support between 1.1500 and 1.1400. The currency pair has predominantly traded above the 1.1400 level since June 2025. However, a move to lower levels remains possible if this support is broken.
