U.S.–CANADA TRADE DEAL:
- TRADE NEGOTIATIONS: The U.S. and Canada are moving closer to a trade agreement that could reduce tariffs on Canadian autos, steel and aluminium. Trump also postponed new tariffs while negotiations continue.
- POTENTIAL USD/CAD IMPACT: Progress toward a trade deal reduces uncertainty around Canadian exports and supports the Canadian dollar. CAD has already strengthened to a two-and-a-half-month high following the temporary tariff reprieve.

U.S. GOVERNMENT:
- BREAKING (AUGUST 19): U.S. TREASURY ANNOUNCED MORE AGGRESSIVE LONG-TERM BOND REPURCHASE PROGRAMME. The Treasury will double the size of its long-term bond repurchase operations to $4 billion from $2 billion, starting September 9. With around $69 billion already planned through November, the larger operations could add at least $14 billion, bringing the total to around $83 billion. The move could increase market liquidity, potentially weighing on the U.S. dollar and USD/CAD.
