Weekly Special Report: Micron Technology (#MICRON)
MICRON: THE COMPANY
- MICRON is a US company that designs, develops, manufactures, and sells innovative semiconductor memory (chips) and storage solutions powering everything from smartphones and PCs (Personal Computers) to data centers, automotive, and AI applications. Founded in 1978, Micron is one of the oldest US chip makers.
- MICRON STOCK IS PART OF THE S&P 500 AND NASDAQ 100 INDEX (USA500, USA100).
- MICRON MAIN PRODUCTS: MEMORY CHIPS. Electronic storage for information so the processors and AI chips can access them. Without memory, a processor has nothing to work on.
DRAM: memory used by CPUs/GPUs to run programs and process data
NAND flash: storage memory used in SSDs (modern computer storage devices that use flash memory (integrated circuits) to store data persistently).
HIGH-BANDWIDTH MEMORY (HBM): very fast, premium memory used in AI chips and AI servers.
MICRON: WHY IT MATTERS IN THE A.I. WORLD
- HIGH-BANDWIDTH MEMORY (HBM): This chip sits right next to the AI chip and feeds data extremely fast, removing the “waiting” problem. Without it, the AI training is slow, or data centers become less efficient.
- AI CHIPS NEED MORE MEMORY: As AI chips become more powerful, each chip needs more memory. At the same time, more AI chips are being deployed, significantly increasing demand for advanced memory like Micron’s HBM.
AI MEMORY INDUSTRY OUTLOOK
- AI MEMORY SHORTAGE MAY LAST FOR YEARS. Multiple memory manufacturers expect AI memory demand to continue exceeding supply for years. Samsung expects global chip shortages to become more acute and extend into 2028, while SK Hynix has said High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) shortages could persist into 2030.
- MEMORY CHIP PRICES ARE RISING: Strong AI demand and limited supply are pushing memory prices higher. DRAM prices rose around 8% in July, while NAND prices rose around 10%. UBS expects the memory chip shortage to continue through 2027, which could keep increasing prices.
- MICRON INCREASES U.S. INVESTMENT AS AI MEMORY DEMAND CONTINUES TO GROW. Micron raised its planned U.S. investment to more than $250 billion through 2035 and announced an additional $10 billion investment in Micron Research Labs in Boise, Idaho. The new R&D hub will focus on next-generation memory, AI computing architectures and advanced packaging, reinforcing Micron’s long-term investment in AI memory technology.
