Weekly Special Report: Platinum
PLATINUM USE AND MARKET SHARE
- PLATINUM has been a key element in auto catalysts for over forty years, especially for diesel engines, and is increasingly vital in hydrogen fuel cells. The automotive sector is its largest consumer, accounting for about 40% of annual demand.
- MARKET SHARE: LARGEST PLATINUM CONSUMER IN THE WORLD. The latest official available data for 2024 showed that China is the world's largest platinum consumer, with a 29% market share.
- MARKET SHARE: LARGEST PLATINUM PRODUCERS IN THE WORLD. South Africa is the largest producer, holding 70–74% of the global market share, while Russia is the second-largest, with 10–12% of the market. Zimbabwe is third, with 5–8%.
PLATINUM: LOW GLOBAL INVENTORIES
- PLATINUM OUTLOOK REMAINS POSITIVE AS GLOBAL INVENTORIES REMAIN LOW. Platinum inventories remain critically low after several years of significant deficits, while supply has limited room to increase significantly. At the same time, industrial demand is expected to grow, supported by applications in automotive, electronics and AI-related infrastructure.
EVENTS (U.S.):
- FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 AT 13:30 GMT+1: U.S. INFLATION DATA (CPI) (AUGUST). Investors will closely watch U.S. inflation after the last two readings declined, from 4.2% in May to 3.5% in June and 3.4% in July. Another weak report could reduce expectations of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike at the September meeting, weighing on the U.S. dollar and supporting platinum prices.
- WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 AT 13:30 GMT+1: U.S. RETAIL SALES (AUGUST). Investors will closely watch Retail Sales after July's reading unexpectedly declined, raising concerns about slowing consumer spending. Another weak report could reduce expectations of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike, weighing on the U.S. dollar and supporting platinum prices.
- WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 AT 19:00 GMT+1: U.S. FEDERAL RESERVE (FED) INTEREST RATE DECISION. The Fed kept interest rates unchanged at 3.75% at its latest meeting and continued to downplay the likelihood of interest rate hikes in 2026. If the Fed maintains this position, it could weigh on the U.S. dollar and support platinum prices.
EVENTS (CHINA):
- TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 AT 03:00 GMT+1: CHINA INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION (AUGUST) (PREVIOUS: +4.5%). For August, the market will be watching whether industrial activity remains resilient. A result above the previous 4.5% would indicate stronger industrial momentum and could support expectations for Chinese economic growth and platinum demand.
TECHNICAL ANALYSIS:
- SUPPORT AREA: $1,500 - $1,700. The support area between $1,500 and $1,700 has been tested several times over the past three months. Although this could indicate limited downside potential, a break below these levels could signal that the downtrend may continue.
- UPTREND (June – September 2026): The daily chart below depicts an ongoing uptrend and an upward trend channel that has been in place since late June 2026. Overall, the platinum price rose from around $1,545 in late June to $1,933 by early September 2026. However, the price could also decline.
- PLATINUM PRICE HIT AN ALL-TIME HIGH OF $2,920 (January 26, 2026). Platinum prices have traded around $1,808, and if a full recovery to the previous all-time high takes place, upside potential of around 61% could be seen. However, the price could also decline.
