Weekly Special Report: EUR/USD
U.S. FEDERAL RESERVE:
- WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 AT 19:00 GMT+1: U.S. FEDERAL RESERVE (FED) INTEREST RATE DECISION. The Fed kept the federal funds target range unchanged at 3.75% at its latest meeting. However, expectations have shifted after stronger inflation data and higher oil prices, and some market participants now expect a 25-basis point rate hike to 4.00%. If the Fed raises interest rates, the U.S. dollar could strengthen and EUR/USD could fall. If rates, however, remain unchanged, EUR/USD could be positively impacted, especially if the Fed also signals that further rate increases are unlikely.
PRESS CONFERENCE (FED CHAIR KEVIN WARSH) AT 19:30 GMT+1. Investors will closely watch Warsh’s comments on inflation, the economy, and future interest rates. If Mr. Warsh continues to downplay the likelihood of future interest rate hikes, this could weigh on the US dollar and support EUR/USD prices.
EVENTS (U.S.):
- WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 AT 13:30 GMT+1: U.S. RETAIL SALES (AUGUST). Retail Sales are a key measure of consumer spending. A weaker than expected reading could support the EUR/USD, although prices could move into the other direction, too.
- THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 AT 13:30 GMT+1: U.S. PHILADELPHIA FED MANUFACTURING INDEX (SEPTEMBER). The index measures business conditions in the Philadelphia manufacturing sector. A weaker than expected reading could support the EUR/USD, although prices could move into the other direction, too.
- THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 AT 13:30 GMT+1: U.S. WEEKLY INITIAL JOBLESS CLAIMS. The data provide a timely view of U.S. labor market conditions. A higher-than-expected reading could support the EUR/USD, although prices could move into the other direction, too.
EVENTS (EUROPE):
- WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 AT 08:00 GMT+1: E.U. STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will outline the EU’s key priorities, with markets likely to focus on competitiveness, defence spending, Ukraine and trade policy. Any major new fiscal or economic initiatives could affect sentiment toward the euro.
- THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 AT 10:00 GMT+1: EUROZONE INFLATION (CPI) (AUGUST). Eurozone inflation currently stands at 3.3%. However, a higher-than-expected reading could support EUR/USD, although prices could move into the other direction, too.
TECHNICAL ANALYSIS
- SUPPORT AREA: 1.1350 - 1.1450. EUR/USD has repeatedly found support within the 1.1350 – 1.1450 area, confirming it as an important technical zone. The pair is also trading within an upward trend channel, with its lower boundary approaching the support area. However, the price can also decline.
