Weekly Special Report: GBP/USD
EVENTS
- THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 AT 13:30 GMT+1: U.S. PRODUCERS’ PRICE INDEX (PPI) (AUGUST). U.S. PPI has continued falling since May, dropping to 4.7% in July from 6.5% in May. If producer inflation continued to fall in August, this could indicate lower consumer inflation, reducing expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike. This could weigh on the U.S. dollar and support the GBP/USD pair.
- THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 AT 13:30 GMT+1: U.S. WEEKLY INITIAL JOBLESS CLAIMS. Initial Jobless Claims came in slightly higher than expected last week (206,000 vs. 205,000 expected). Another higher-than-expected reading could indicate further weakness in the U.S. labor market, reducing expectations of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike, weighing on the U.S. dollar and supporting the GBP/USD pair.
- FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 AT 13:30 GMT+1: U.S. INFLATION DATA (CPI) (AUGUST). Investors will closely watch U.S. inflation after the last two readings declined, from 4.2% in May to 3.5% in June and 3.4% in July. Another weak report could reduce expectations of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike at the September meeting, weighing on the U.S. dollar and supporting the GBP/USD pair.
- WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 AT 13:30 GMT+1: U.S. RETAIL SALES (AUGUST). Investors will closely watch Retail Sales after July's reading unexpectedly declined, raising concerns about slowing consumer spending. Another weak report could reduce expectations of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike, weighing on the U.S. dollar and supporting the GBP/USD pair.
- WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 AT 07:00 GMT+1: UK INFLATION DATA (CPI) (AUGUST). UK inflation increased to 2.9% in July. If inflation remains elevated or increases further in August, this could increase expectations that the Bank of England will keep interest rates higher for longer or raise rates, supporting the British pound and the GBP/USD pair.
U.S. FEDERAL RESERVE
- EVENT (WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 AT 19:00 GMT+1): U.S. FEDERAL RESERVE (FED) INTEREST RATE DECISION. The Fed kept interest rates unchanged at 3.75% at its latest meeting and continued to downplay the likelihood of further rate hikes in 2026.
BANK OF ENGLAND CENTRAL BANK
- EVENT (THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 AT 12:00 GMT+1): BANK OF ENGLAND (BOE) INTEREST RATE DECISION. The Bank of England is expected to keep interest rates unchanged at 3.75%. However, markets expect at least one interest rate hike by the end of 2026.
U.S. GOVERNMENT:
- EVENT (WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9): U.S. TREASURY STIMULUS-LIKE LONG-TERM BOND REPURCHASE PROGRAMME TO BEGIN. The programme will start implementing on September 9, 2026. The US Treasury could use its near $1 trillion General Account (TGA) to help fund its announced plans to increase purchases of government bonds. The move could increase market liquidity, potentially weighing on the U.S. dollar and supporting the GBP/USD pair.
TECHNICAL ANALYSIS:
- SUPPORT AREA: 1.3400 LEVEL: GBP/USD continues to trade above the 1.3400 support level, an important technical area that has acted as support several times since 2025. However, a break below this level could increase downside pressure.
