Weekly Special Report: Platinum
PLATINUM USE AND MARKET SHARE
- PLATINUM has been a key element in auto catalysts for over forty years, especially for diesel engines, and is increasingly vital in hydrogen fuel cells. The automotive sector is its largest consumer, accounting for about 40% of annual demand.
- MARKET SHARE: LARGEST PLATINUM CONSUMER IN THE WORLD. The latest official available data for 2024 showed that China is the world's largest platinum consumer, with a 29% market share.
- MARKET SHARE: LARGEST PLATINUM PRODUCERS IN THE WORLD. South Africa is the largest producer, holding 70–74% of the global market share, while Russia is the second-largest, with 10–12% of the market. Zimbabwe is third, with 5–8%.
PLATINUM: LOW GLOBAL INVENTORIES
- PLATINUM OUTLOOK REMAINS POSITIVE AS GLOBAL INVENTORIES REMAIN LOW. Platinum inventories remain critically low after several years of significant deficits, while supply has limited room to increase significantly. At the same time, industrial demand is expected to grow, supported by applications in automotive, electronics and AI-related infrastructure.
EVENTS (U.S.):
- THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22 AT 13:30 GMT+1: U.S. WEEKLY INITIAL JOBLESS CLAIMS. U.S. Weekly Initial Jobless Claims came in as expected at 199,000 last week, up from 198,000 the previous week.
- WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28 AT 18:00 GMT+1: U.S. FEDERAL RESERVE (FED) INTEREST RATE DECISION. The Fed raised interest rates from 3.75% to 4.00% at its September meeting. Markets widely expect the Fed to keep rates unchanged in October. If the Fed signals that further rate hikes are unlikely, the U.S. dollar could weaken, potentially supporting platinum prices.
- THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29 AT 12:30 GMT+1: U.S. GDP (Q3). The final reading for second-quarter GDP showed economic growth of 2.2%, above expectations of 1.5%. If third-quarter GDP (Q3) growth comes in below expectations, it could raise concerns about the U.S. economy and weaken the U.S. dollar, potentially supporting platinum prices.
EVENTS (CHINA):
- SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31 AT 01:30 GMT+1: CHINA MANUFACTURING PMI (OCTOBER). The Manufacturing PMI (Purchasing Managers’ Index) provides an early indication of activity in China’s manufacturing sector. In September, the index increased from 49.8 to 50.1, in line with expectations. Another stronger-than-expected reading could signal improving industrial activity and demand for platinum, potentially supporting platinum prices.
