GEOPOLITICS: TRADE PROGRESS AND OPTIMISM
- PROGRESS IN THE U.S.–E.U. TRADE TALKS: Trade negotiations between the U.S. and E.U. are well underway and set to continue until August 1, with both sides reporting progress and willingness to reach a deal. Optimism is growing that an agreement could be reached in time to avoid new tariffs and strengthen transatlantic trade ties. The improving tone of the talks has boosted sentiment across European markets, with the GER40 supported by the prospect of reduced trade barriers for major German exporters such as Volkswagen, Siemens, and BASF.
GERMAN EXPORTERS BENEFIT. Key GER40-listed multinationals such as Volkswagen, Siemens, and BASF are expected to benefit from increased global demand and fewer supply chain disruptions, especially coming from Asian and European markets.
CENTRAL BANKS:
- EVENT (THURSDAY, JULY 24 AT 13:15 GMT+1): EUROPEAN CENTRAL BANK (ECB) INTEREST RATE DECISION. President Lagarde will then host a press conference at 13:45 GMT+1. The ECB cut its benchmark interest rate in June from 2.40% to the current 2.15%, and investors expect the ECB could continue with their rate-cutting cycle. If the ECB decides on an interest rate cut, this could push the GER40 higher, as borrowing costs for businesses could become lower and therefore allow for the economy to grow and expand.
STATISTICS: THE GER40 HIT AN ALL-TIME HIGH OF 24,746.1 (JULY 10, 2025). GER40 HAS RISEN AROUND 34.50% SINCE THE ECB STARTED CUTTING INTEREST RATES IN JUNE 2024. HOWEVER, THE PRICE COULD DECLINE.
GER40, July 22, 2025.
