Description:The Standard and Poor’s 500 is an American stock market index based on the largest 500 companies mainly by market capitalization that are listed on the New York Stock Exchange or NASDAQ. It is seen as a leading indicator of US equities and considered to be most representative of US stocks due to its diverse constituency. Shares listed on the SP500 include Apple, General Electric, Goldman Sachs and Honeywell International.
The Index used to be known as the Composite Index and was first introduced in 1923 tracking a small number of stocks but by 1957 it expanded to 500.
The S&P is the preferred index for US stocks and has unseated the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which is only made up of 30 companies.
