Shares listed on the SP500 include Apple, General Electric, Goldman Sachs and Honeywell International. The Index used to be known as the Composite Index and was first introduced in 1923 tracking a small number of stocks but by 1957 it expanded to 500.The S&P is the preferred index for US stocks and has unseated the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which is only made up of 30 companies.
