FTSE 100 Index (ticker: UKX) is a basket benchmark that tracks the financial performance of the 100 largest companies traded on the LSE (London Stock Exchange). The Index, which is traded in the over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives market, is one of the most well-known and most frequently used stock indices in the world. It began operating on 3 January, 1984 with a base level of 1000, and reached its all-time high of 6950.6 on 30 December, 1999. FTSE 100 companies represent around 81% of the market capitalization of the LSE, with the majority of these being large multinational corporations. Constituent members are determined quarterly, on the Wednesday of the month prior to March, June, September and December. Typical trading hours of the FTSE 100 run from 08:00 to 16:29 CET, the hour at which the market closing auction starts.
